Nevada Senator Ben Kieckhefer is currently drafting legislation for a governmental esports oversight body, which would be modelled after the Nevada Athletic Commission. The proposed board would issue official esports competition licenses and officiate events in the state, but what would it mean for esports in the US?

Esports industry is still in its developmental stages. The current standards for tournament hosting would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. There’s still plenty of room to progress as Kieckhefer acknowledges.

The current lack of oversight is the biggest obstacle between esports and their potential. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive alone provided hundreds of cheating accusations in 2020, many of which were investigated and confirmed by the Esports Integrity Commission.

A governmental body with the ability to enact and enforce rulings would greatly impact the public perception of esports. As of right now, rule enforcement is entirely up to the tournament organiser, which can lead to some very messy situations. A legal body could interfere with improper rules enforcement and hold tournament organisers accountable.

Las Vegas could become the capital of Esports

Betting operators should keep a close eye on Senator Kieckhefer’s proposals. A governing body is a huge step towards legitimising esports events in the public eye, meaning general awareness for esports should increase as a result.

No partners have been mentioned yet but a new overseer will need to cooperate with the existing ecosystem. Anti-cheating agencies like the ESIC and tournament hosts such as the Electronic Sports League will likely become involved. Betting sites should consider partnerships with existing regulatory groups as they’ll become even more coveted once acknowledged by legal bodies.

Multiple gambling experts claim that the move will further centralise Las Vegas as the US’ esports capital. Seth Schorr of the Nevada Independent likens the current state of esports to the glory days of Las Vegas boxing.

“We have already seen how sanctioning professional boxing and UFC has helped tourism, generated tax revenue, created jobs and enhanced the Nevada visitor experience by providing them a wonderfully entertaining experience,” he wrote.

Moreover, existing esports infrastructure in Vegas, including the HyperX Esports Arena at The Luxor, will become even more valuable for their proximity to America’s sole esports oversight committee.

Back in May, the largest operator of Strip resorts announced it was restoring free parking at all of its Las Vegas properties. The decision, MGM execs said, was part of the plan to lure back visitors amid COVID-19. Valet remains on hold because of the pandemic.

MGM has also partnered with Fuelster, an on-demand fuel service. MGM guests simply download the Fuelster app, leave their gas door open after parking in a casino garage, and schedule a fill-up. There is no delivery or membership fee, and Fuelster says the gallon prices are similar to what is being sold at gas stations in the area.

The pandemic has resulted in a halt of global and domestic travel. Visitor volume through October is down 54.2 percent in Las Vegas. Despite the first shipments of vaccine being sent across the country this week, new cases and hospitalizations are surging.

With the disease still running rampant, MGM’s on-demand fuel service perhaps has more of a purpose. Consumer Reports said earlier this year that fuel pump handles and payment keypads can be contaminated with the virus.

The nonprofit consumer organization advises car travelers to bring along disposable nitrile or latex gloves. It also suggests using hand sanitizer once the car is gassed and the gloves have been disposed of.

Jenny Jiang claims Crown’s VIP strategy in China put profit before people. Her lawsuit seeks damages, alleging Crown violated its duty of care towards its employees.

Jiang earned around $27,000 a year working for Crown’s China-based VIP marketing team. The department was tasked with recruiting high rollers to gamble millions at the Crown Melbourne’s high stakes baccarat tables.

In June 2017, 16 of her colleagues, including three Australians, were sent to prison by the Baoshan District People’s Court of Shanghai for promoting gambling. Jiang was released earlier than the others because she did not play a direct part in enlisting gamblers.

In July 2019, she turned whistleblower. Jiang became the only detainee to talk to the media about the experience. She described the Shanghai Office as a “Wolf of Wall Street” style operation, with huge bonuses and vacations to Las Vegas on offer for the most successful employees.

Also, she described the time incarcerated among “drug dealers, pickpockets, and prostitutes,” and the overwhelming shame she felt about her criminal record and the stigma it had brought to her family.

She said she received no apology from Crown Resorts. She also refused a $60,000 hush money payment from the gaming giant.
