The major resorts on the Strip are outside Las Vegas city limits, under Clark County jurisdiction.

The people-mover system was put to real use for the first time last week during the World of Concrete trade show at the Convention Center. The $52.5 million project was developed by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.

Its 1.7-mile tunnel system is intended to turn a long walk across the Convention Center campus into a two-minute ride. 

The LVCVA has touted the Tesla system and new $1 billion West Hall at the Convention Center to attract conventions to Las Vegas.

According to the Wall Street Journal, since 1999, Las Vegas Strip casinos have made more money from conventions and hotel amenities, including entertainment and food, than from gambling.

In an arrangement with local governments, The Boring Co. is planning to build a 15-mile “Vegas Loop” beneath casinos on the Strip and other sites in the area.

The plan calls for the loop’s tunnels to connect with McCarran International Airport and Allegiant Stadium.

Hill thinks the Tesla transit system will be “particularly important” once it extends to the Strip, the airport, and downtown Las Vegas.

“It’s an express service, so the rides are very quick,” he said. “You don’t have to stop at every station along the way. You can get from Mandalay Bay to here at the Convention Center in five minutes.”

As part of that recovery effort, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has touted its new $1 billion West Hall at the Convention Center and $52.5 million Tesla people mover by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.

Officials said that the only people who can use the underground Tesla system for the convention are attendees with official badges. Convention Center staff also will be allowed to ride in the Teslas.

The intent of the 1.7 mile underground tunnel system is to move attendees from different sites at the convention center. As many as 60000 people attended pre-pandemic World of Concrete events in Las Vegas. This year’s number has not been released.

Conventions are considered important in filling up Las Vegas hotel rooms, especially during the slower middle of the week.

Beyond that, plans are in place to expand the Tesla tunnels in Vegas.  The Boring Company has entered into an agreement with local governments to build a 15 mile “Vegas Loop” to include hotel-casinos and attractions. 

Plans are underway to built a tunnel to Encore Las Vegas and Resorts World Las Vegas. Encore is on the east side of the Strip. Resorts World was built at the location of the now-demolished Stardust Casino.

The Las Vegas Raiders also have been in discussions to connect Allegiant Stadium to the underground Tesla network. The off-Strip, 65000-seat stadium is just west of Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

In 1969, the late Kirk Kerkorian bought 40% of studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, later bringing the iconic brand to Sin City. That lead to the creation of corporate entities MGM Grand Inc., MGM Mirage and, ultimately, MGM Resorts International.

Tracinda Corp., a holding company for Kerkorian’s estate for his two daughters, at one point owned 16.2% of the gaming firm. That stake was pared in subsequent years, and was liquidated entirely in September 2019.

In 2020, Kerkorian’s estate donated $4 million to MGM Resorts Employee Emergency Grant Fund, which was set up to assist workers displaced by the pandemic.

The speculation of Amazon entering wagering space

There has been some talk about Amazon eventually entering the gaming space. But it’s just speculation. Much of that chatter is driven by the company holding an 11 year deal with the NFL to stream 15 games a year.

Amazon Web Services, the world’s largest cloud computing outfit, is also the provider of next generation analytics and statistics to the NFL, prompting some talk the company could move into sports betting data at some point.

However, Amazon hasn’t publicly commented on any plans to move into the casino or sports betting businesses.

Wynn Resorts operates the Wynn Las Vegas and adjacent Encore on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip, where the Desert Inn stood for decades.

MGM Resorts owns several major hotel casinos in Las Vegas. Many are on the west side of the Strip, including the Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, and Mirage. The company also owns the MGM Grand on the east side of the resort corridor.

Wynn Resorts employees are required to wear a mask unless they can provide vaccine verification. MGM Resorts employees are required to wear face mask.

The Cosmopolitan is not requiring masks for fully vaccinated guests and employees. The resort towers over the older Jockey Club on the west side of the Strip.

The Venetian and adjacent Palazzo are on the east side of the Strip at the site of the now demolished Sands Casino. Fully vaccinated patrons are not required to wear masks but employees are required to.

Nevada Gaming Control Board said it is up to each operator whether to check that a customer has been vaccinated. In a statement, Wynn Resorts said it trusts guests “to take the appropriate precautions based on their personal vaccination status.”

The issue of how to confirm whether a casino customer has been vaccinated became a topic of debate on social media in these days.

Resorts World Las Vegas, which is set to open on June 24, is reported to have received license from Nevada Gaming Control Board for approval. The Genting Berhad-owned casino resort also has announced a partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Gemini to explore future opportunities that will allow Gemini crypto wallet users to use the cryptocurrency facility for payments at the casino.

In a joint statement, Resorts World Las Vegas and Gemini said the partnership aims to make the former one of the most crypto-friendly resorts on the Las Vegas Strip.

“Together, the companies are pursuing creation and implementation of crypto-friendly services at best-in-class institutional rates across all areas of the integrated resort experience.

“Details of these services will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks,” Resorts World Las Vegas and Gemini said.

Resorts World Las Vegas president Scott Sibella said in the statement that by collaborating Gemini, it is taking another step towards providing advanced guest experience solutions.

“As the first ground-up resort development on the strip in more than a decade, Resorts World Las Vegas is committed to integrating innovative technology conveniences across the resort to enhance the overall guest journey,” Sibella said.

Resorts World Las Vegas operator Resorts World Las Vegas LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Genting.

Esports industry is still in its developmental stages. The current standards for tournament hosting would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. There’s still plenty of room to progress as Kieckhefer acknowledges. 

The current lack of oversight is the biggest obstacle between esports and their potential. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive alone provided hundreds of cheating accusations in 2020, many of which were investigated and confirmed by the Esports Integrity Commission.

A governmental body with the ability to enact and enforce rulings would greatly impact the public perception of esports. As of right now, rule enforcement is entirely up to the tournament organiser, which can lead to some very messy situations. A legal body could interfere with improper rules enforcement and hold tournament organisers accountable.

Las Vegas could become the capital of Esports

Betting operators should keep a close eye on Senator Kieckhefer’s proposals. A governing body is a huge step towards legitimising esports events in the public eye, meaning general awareness for esports should increase as a result.

No partners have been mentioned yet but a new overseer will need to cooperate with the existing ecosystem. Anti-cheating agencies like the ESIC and tournament hosts such as the Electronic Sports League will likely become involved. Betting sites should consider partnerships with existing regulatory groups as they’ll become even more coveted once acknowledged by legal bodies.

Multiple gambling experts claim that the move will further centralise Las Vegas as the US’ esports capital. Seth Schorr of the Nevada Independent likens the current state of esports to the glory days of Las Vegas boxing.

“We have already seen how sanctioning professional boxing and UFC has helped tourism, generated tax revenue, created jobs and enhanced the Nevada visitor experience by providing them a wonderfully entertaining experience,” he wrote.

Moreover, existing esports infrastructure in Vegas, including the HyperX Esports Arena at The Luxor, will become even more valuable for their proximity to America’s sole esports oversight committee.
